A probe into a fatal shooting last October has cleared the officers involved in the death. Sixty-one year old George Arthur Pryor of Rackley Street was killed when he fired at Statesboro Police and code enforcement officers who had gone to his residence in regard to a civil matter. After talking to the officers Pryor went back inside his house but then came out again with a 12-guage shotgun. Witnesses said he fired first. Officers returned fire killing him.
An autopsy showed Pryor died from four gunshot wounds, two of which were to the head.
The officers were placed on administrative leave while an investigation into the shooting was held.
A Georgia Bureau of Investigation as well as an internal investigation by the Statesboro Police Department cleared police Lt. Anthony Gore and Code Enforcement Officer Eric Short. The Bulloch County Grand Jury also returned no bills in favor of the two.
This was not the first time police had gone to Pryor’s residence. In December of 2011 he was charged with simple assault, criminal use of an item with altered identification, discharging a firearm on or near a public highway and reckless conduct. He reported fired two shots at the feet of a woman.
