American Legion looking for volunteers

Written by  Monday, 12 May 2014 09:26

Saturday, May 24, is Memorial Day.  Each year American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 in Statesboro places American flags at the graves of Bulloch County veterans.   With the help of two Boy Scout Troops and Hodges-Moore Funeral Home they expect to place at least 1,800 flags this year.  They have placed flags at the graves for more than ten years now.

Post Commander Terry Preslar also asks that if anyone knows of any cemetery in the county that has not been included in the program in the past to contact him.

That is quite a task and they are asking for additional volunteers to help place the flags.   Preslar said is quite a project each year and if anyone would like to volunteer to help call him at 912-682-2734.  He invites individuals and entire organizations to help with the project.

Currently about 800 flags measuring 8 x 12 inches mounted on a 25-inch staff are on hand.  Plans are to buy another 1,000.  it costs about $2,000 each year to place new flags and replace old worn flags.  The flags remain at each grave for the entire year and are replaced each year.
