Motorcycle crash kills one, injures another

Written by  Thursday, 24 April 2014 09:18

A crash between two motorcycles resulted in one person being killed and another in the hospital in critical condition.

The Georgia State Patrol said the crash occurred shortly before 6:30 Wednesday morning on Georgia Highway near mile marker 12 when 21 year old Caleb Wayne Hazzard of Beaver Road in Guyton attempted to pass a car.  Trooper 1st Class  Carl Hutchison said his motorcycle met another motorcycle operated by 51 year old Merritt Larry Chambers of Nesmith Proctor Road in Brooklet.

Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch said Chambers was flown to a hospital in Augusta for treatment of serious injuries.  He said Hazzard was pronounced dead at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro.

The exact cause of the fatal crash has not yet been determined but Trooper 1st Class Jamie Holloway said in a report it appears Hazzard was operating his motorcycle in a “reckless, careless manner”.  Investigation is continuing by the Statesboro Post 45 of the Georgia State Patrol .
