Each year, the Statesboro Exchange Club awards students in their “Youth of the Month” program, but only once a year does a student receive that title of “Youth of the Year”. Southeast Bulloch High School Senior Morgan Alford, 18, won the title for this year and a grand prize of a $2,000 scholarship. The award, which is given to those who display a remarkable career in high school, takes a look at student’s community service and school activities as well. Alford will attend the University of Georgia to study either civil engineering or veterinary medicine.
Alford has collected canned food on Saturday mornings at Ken's IGA for donation to the Statesboro Food Bank as a Beta Club member. She has also helped Keep Bulloch Beautiful, and raised money for The Children's Hospital in Savannah.
In addition to their service and activity requirements, perspective honorees must have a cumulative "B" average or better, take college prep courses and plan to attend a college or university.
