With all the severe winter weather over the past several weeks the Red Cross was forced to cancel drives which is making it difficult to maintain enough blood for emergencies and other needs.
Since January the severe winter weather has resulted in the cancellations more than 600 blood drives resulting in 20,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations. In Georgia, severe winter weather forced the cancellation of more than 50 Red Cross blood drives, resulting in about more than 2,000 fewer than expected blood and platelet donations.
Today’s blood drive is scheduled for Georgia Southern University in the Williams Center Multi-purpose Room from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m.
Thursday's drive will be in the Doctors’ Office Building adjacent to the hospital in the Mims Monroe Blood Services Center, Suite 307 from 12:30 till 5:30 p.m.
All types of blood are needed but the Red Cross is particularly urging people with blood types O-positive and negative, A-negative and B-negative to donate. These are the most in demand types.
If you would like to make a donation but time is short, you can make an appointment to make the donation process fit your schedule. To make an appointment by phone, call: 1-800-733-2767 (1-800-Red Cross). Online, go to www.redcrossblood.org and click on Make -a-Blood Donation Appointment.
