In a special program at Forest Heights Country Club Monday, both the Statesboro and Downtown Statesboro Rotary Clubs named Charles D. Sikes the 2014 Citizen of the Year.
Sikes has had impressive careers in the military and law enforcement. He is a veteran of the Viet Nam War and as a Department of Defense contractor has trained and assisted law enforcement personal in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2001 he retired from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation after 30…the last 10 serving as special agent in charges of the Statesboro Regional GBI office. He served as manager of the Bulloch County probation office for 3 years. Currently he is interim clerk of the Bulloch County Superior Court.
Sikes thanked the members of both Rotary clubs for the honor and shared it with others in clerk’s office. He said he will not seek the post permanently but would continue in the interim until a constitutionally selected clerk returns. A special election will be held during the May 20 general primary to find someone to replace Teresa Tucker who resigned December 31 after pleading guilty to two felony counts of violation of oath of public office.
The 67 year old Sikes is a Candler County native, born in Metter.
