About 8:30 p.m. Thursday A deputy with the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Target Enforcement Patrol saw a man later identified as 30 year old Edward Jermaine Rawls of West Grady Street got out a car in the vicinity of The Lodge Apartments.
When the car pulled away Rawls, holding an open beer bottle, began walking toward the deputy. The report said when Rawls saw the deputy get out of his patrol car he hesitated. When asked about the bottle Rawls, who was described as nervous and jittery, said he was just trying to get home and started to turn away.
The report said the deputy was concerned Rawls had a weapon when his right hand went toward the waist of his pants and ordered him to place both hands on the patrol car which he did. However the deputy pulled his service weapon when Rawls reportedly reached his waist again after being told he was going to be searched for a weapon. The deputy ordered him to get on the ground. He went to his knees but did not lie down as ordered. He complied with the second order to lie down on the ground. Backup units were called.
Rawls reportedly spit several times at the patrol car. Pieces of suspected cocaine were found in the saliva. A plastic bag was found in the immediate area which a K-9 deputy alerted as cocaine.
Rawls was placed in the Bulloch County Jail charged with possession of cocaine.
