Two interviewed for Eagles head coach

Last Tuesday it was announced in a press conference that Jeff Monken had accepted the same position at Army.  Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein also announced he had already begun the process of finding a new coach and a good many candidates had expressed an interest.

According to reports two candidates were interviewed last week.  Both are familiar with Georgia having been on the coaching staffs of two successful head coaches.

In 2010 Brent Pye was defensive coordinator under Monken before going to Vanderbilt in 2011 to be the Commodores’ linebackers coach under head coach James Franklin.  He is also assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator.  Sources say he is considered to be the leading candidate to replace Monken at Georgia Southern.

For the past 14 years Ivin Jasper has been the quarterback coach and offensive coordinator for the past 6 years at Navy.  He has roots at Georgia Southern as well.  He was quarterbacks and fullbacks for former Eagles head coach Paul Johnson.

There were reports that two other candidates… Zach Azzanni of Tennessee and Rhett Lashlee of Auburn…had also been interviewed but that is apparently incorrect.   Several other names have been bandied about as potential candidates.

Kleinlein said it is possible to new head coach will be chosen prior to the resumption of classes in 2014.
