Jeff Monken Jeff Monken   It was announced Tuesday that Jeff Monken will replace Rick Ellerson as the head coach at Army.

Georgia Southern Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein told a press conference Tuesday Tom KleinleinTom Kleinleinhe was told by Monken he had accepted the position at the United Statesboro Military Academy.  He said he told Monken he is a big part of the success at Georgia Southern and wished him and his family well.  Kleinlein said everyone was very grateful for the time he spent here in Statesboro.

During his four seasons at Georgia Southern Monken compiled a 38 and 16 record.  Prior to that he was assistant coach under Paul Johnson at Navy and Georgia Tech.  He successfully implemented the return of the triple option to the Eagles football program.

Kleinlein said he is already in the process of finding the best coach that fits the institution’s profile.  Some of the things he is looking for in the next head is someone who understands what it is to run a program and be a CEO, manage a program and be a part of our community, understand and embrace the traditions and where Georgia Southern is going forward as a football program and a university.

Kleinlein said interest in the position is very high and he is pleased at the number of people  who have expressed an interest.  He said he was making no promises but a new coach may be named by the time classes resume in January.

President Brooks Keel said Monken has been tremendous asset to the program and even though he hates to see him go, his decision was one that could not be passed up.
