Former deputy clerks Leatha DeLoach, Marion Williams and Amanda Smith were each sentenced to 10 years probation and must pay restitution of $6,000 after pleading guilty to theft by conversion. Charges of violation of oath of office and records tampering were dropped in the plea deal. The probation could be lifted after four years if they do not engage in any criminal violations.
Current Clerk Teresa Tucker maintains her innocence and the case against her continues. Governor Nathan Deal granted her request for suspension from office during the court proceedings.
Charges against former clerk Sherri Akins were quashed after her attorneyspresented evidence that Tucker and her attorney were present and allowed to give evidence while the grand jury was considering the presentments. They argued the evidence against Akins was “tainted.”
Eastern Judicial Circuit Chief Assistant District Attorney Greg McConnell, who is prosecuting the case, said his office will seek another indictment against Akins.
The charges followed a three year probe by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation into alleged unlawful activities in the office.
