Jan Moore, a psychologist in the Bulloch County School System and business editor for the Statesboro Herald, is seeking the position of mayor. This is first foray into seeking a public office. Incumbent mayor Joe Brannen recently said he was considering his options but has yet to announce his decision to run again.
Fourth District Councilman John Riggs and First District Councilman Phil Boyum made it official to seek another term on the council.
Riggs was elected to the 4th District seat in 2009 and is seeking his second term on the council.
Boyum won a special election last year to fill the unexpired term of Tommy Blitch who resigned citing health reasons. Boyum is seeking his first full term in office.
As of 4:30 Monday afternoon they are the only candidates who have officially qualified for those seats. Potential candidates still have the rest of this week to get into the mix. Qualifying continues through end of this at City Hall from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m.through Thursday and from 8 a.m. till4:30 p.m. Friday.
All candidates must meet certain age and residency requirements and be registered voters. The fee of the city council seats is $227 and the fee for mayor is $560.
