Federal and local authorities are investigating two bank robberies Monday, one each in Jenkins and Effingham counties. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said the robberies occurred within hours of each other but at this point they do not appear to be related.
The first robbery was around 10:30 Monday morning when the Queensborough National Bank and Trust on East Winthrop Avenue in Millen was robbed by a black male wearing a light-colored, narrow brimmed hat. That robbery is being investigated by the Statesboro office of the FBI.
About three and a half hours later a black man wearing a straw hat and orange vest robbed First Effingham Bank on Georgia Highway 21 in Rincon. He was described about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, was wearing blue work jeans and brandishing a silver handgun. The Savannah FBI office is heading up that investigation.
No one was injured in either of the robberies. The FBI declined to say how much money was taken in either of the robberies.
