Police, sheriff warn of scam

A scam aimed at ATV dealers is being reported by area law enforcement.  The scam involves two men who attempt to buy an all terrain vehicle from a dealer by using a credit card.  When the transaction fails a third person, usually a woman, becomes involved who authorizes the card.  The two original scammers take possession of the ATV and leave.  Later the dealer learns the card was fraudulent.

Several ATV dealers in surrounding counties have been victimized by the scam but none yet in Bulloch County.

Statesboro Police and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Department are being proactive to prevent the same thing happening here by contacting local dealers.  Both agencies are making phone calls to area ATV dealers warning them of the scam.  They are being advised to get descriptions of suspect, their vehicle, tag number and direction of travel if the scam should be tried.

Should such a scam be attempted, dealers are being advised to call the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Department at 764-1771, or the Statesboro Police Department at 764-9911 depending of the location of the dealership.
